China like any other developing country started to urbanized it’s population, it’s rush became develop country china created many infrastructure projects which would provide jobs and revenue to the people and also the lifestyle of an urban society which China wanted to create. As to meet this demand China start to created huge huge urban city with modern infrastructure.
Over last three decade China has build hundred of city to promote over 250 million rural inhabitants which is six times the population of California, within 2026. As this city showcased the urban mentality of china’s officials and accomplishments of the local Government, which is by their saying able create high value jobs and provide high return investment for the China’s growth.
As always all plan does not go as planed, most of this remained emptied as it’s difficult to run a city from scratch, people don’t really want to move into these cites leaving their ancestral home and feels dead for the lack of people and also these places lack commerce and jobs, for people to sustain their lives. The soaring cost of living in those high end cites also deter people. Also sometimes these city built around current economic boom, local business and industry.
But as China’s economy started to slow down. These cites suffered as people started to leave for lack of business and a Ghost town is created.
The most famous of the ghost city is Ordos City Designed as the crowing jewel of the Chinese development and a modern marvel in urban planing and design.
With futuristic design and pristine parks, this city is situated in the desert of northern china Only 2% where ever occupied and rest are largely emptied and abandoned in mid-construction due to bad loan and bad debt. Inner Mongolia, birthplace of Genghis Khan and only place to use Mongolia Script. With population of 79% of predominant Han ethnicity and 17% Mongol origin.
It was predicated in 2003 that city of Ordos would easily take over the GDP of Beijing with it’s ever growing urban population. But soon the bubble burst and as nobody have excepted that this development center fall on his face, so quickly. Investors pull’s out, deadlines never meet, bad loans created bad debts and soon this city’s progress stopped.
After the circle of progress stopped, city became dotted with unfinished buildings. You can see entire streets of unfinished buildings with crane still hanging there. More like skeleton city with half finished body of buildings. Apart from being dead and empty soaring real estate prices make it even tough for those who wanted to move in.
So governments and real estate agents had a very tough job to sell any apartments and house to the people. According to locals, those came also started leave for lack of lively-hood and unable to sustain in this dead city. So now Ordos has truly became a ghost town. A report by AlJazeera on November 2009 exposed the conditions in Ordos to a global audience and after a story from Times prove to be the final nail.

Actually this fame have helped Ordos little bit for the dwelling population that lived their as they found a new source of income from this tourist.
In the peek of China’s real estate boom developers started creating urban cities in the vision of western mega cities like London. Paris, Chicago, Manhattan.
One city truly define this Chinese effort is Tianducheng is a town situated in the suburbs of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Tianducheng or “Sky Capital City” is a real estate model city which is being created on Paris. The highlight of the town would be 354 foot Eiffel Tower.
They model this city as Paris in every possible way with luxurious gated community and other landmark from Paris. But one major difference there is no people, whole city is empty with few hundreds of people living there, even the fountain is empty. No hustle and bustle of people. no cafes and business are operating in the region.
It’s a Chinese city with french surrounding. Local business owner says that are aren’t any people to run a profitable business. Only the tourist of wedding photographers come here, for their photo-shot. As it’s far less cheap to travel here than Paris and visit Eiffel tower.
Tianducheng is not only single western model city that you able to see in China. They also have duplicated London’s famed tower bridge in Chinese city of Suzhou.
A version of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, complete with cowboys, a church and Route 66 outside Beijing just past the Great Wall.
There is also Thames town, in suburbs of Shanghai which model after London with Tudor architecture, harry potter and Churchill statue. Also they have red phone booths and guards dressed in British uniform.
