Society is on the brink of collapsing, and the apocalypse has never looked this good.

Over 2000 Mad Max fans gathered at the Mojave Desert in southern California for the biggest post-apocalyptic festival yet. The Wasteland Weekend – held from September 22 to 25 – might just be a dream for dystonia photography enthusiasts.

Once you walk through the gates of the Wasteland, you will immediately be taken into the not-so-distant future. This annual four-day event had dedicated road warriors venturing under the scorching heat decked out in the most elaborate costumes, emulating what fashion would look like if people come to survive the end of the world.

The first of the Mad Max franchise came out in 1979. Their latest and fourth installment, Mad Max: Fury Road, came out in 2015, and has received enormous praise and recognition, winning multiple awards last year to early this year including the Academy Award for Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hair styling. All movies in the franchise were directed by George Miller who was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director.

Participants not only walk around in earth-toned fringes and spikes, helmets and studs, combat boots and camo, they have the accessories to match. Upon entrance, road warriors carry with them their trusty weapons, and are even encouraged to drive modified vehicles fit for the occasion.

A certain enthusiast proudly rode his own motorized, metallic horse that would give Imperator Furiosa a run for her money. These Wastelanders didn’t seem too worried about their ever-approaching demise at the possibility of a real nuclear holocaust. Most participants looked like they were already very well-prepared for the collapse of civilization. These people definitely know how to go out in style.

There was a wide array of activities for these Wastelanders to enjoy in the desertscape like bungee fights, bonfires, circus acts, fire dancing, and dancing to music played by disc jockeys in the same detailed attires. This festival serves as an escape, where people can be who and what they want to be.

The apocalypse might just be something we’ll all be looking forward to.
