Mary Kom, an excellent sports woman from India has won World Amateur Boxing Championship for five times. Known as ‘Magnificent Mary’, the lady is the first Indian woman to receive gold medal in Asian games.
Born on March 1st, 1983 in a poor family in the town Kangathei. Mary has a great interest in the field of boxing since childhood. She was considered as ‘Tom Boy’ in her schooling years. Mary completed her primary education from Loktak Christian Model high school. After completing her graduation from college, Mary was inspired to make boxing as her full time career option. Mary was greatly influenced by the victory of gold medalist Dingko Singh’s in Asian games held in 1998. Mary faced a bit discouragement in the initial stage of her boxing career. However, after few years she got the true support and encouragement from her family. For her great struggle, efforts and excellent boxing skills, the Manipur’s government decided to Name the road lining of the village on the name of Mary Kom. They have honored Mary with the post of Additional Superintendant of police. Mary is the only Female boxer to get her inclusion in 2012 summer Olympics. Mary is considered as an active member of sports authority of India. The lady is the lead founder of Regional Boxing Academy, established in Manipur. Mary is married to Mr. K. Onler Kom. She has two children. According to Mary, her husband is her lucky charm. He is a caring and supporting person and the right partner for her.

Further in 2006, Mary again won the 46 kg division gold medal at the AIBA world women’s senior boxing championship.
The lady was honored with the India’s second most prestigious award ‘Padam Shree’. Her name was included as the contender for Rajiv Gandhi Khel award, 2007. Mary also won the People’s award in the year 2007. She has registered her name in the Limca book of records, for her amazing boxing skills. The Reliance Industries have awarded Mary with the title ‘Real Hero’. Mary also won the Rajiv Gandhi khel Ratna award in the year 2009. Mary Kom is presently serving as the Ambassador of International Boxing Association.
