Witness Me !! Kurdish Forces Rolling into Battle with Mad Max-Style Vehicles
The Peshmerga forces fighting ISIS in its last bastion of Mosul are charging forward in the most dystopian fashion. Constantly up against a well-equipped ISIS army, the Kurds have to make do with what they have. And a lot of times what that comes down to is ageing soviet weaponry and carriers, and tractors.
New Machines from the Fury Road
In a scene taken right out of George Miller’s post-apocalyptic classic, the fighters have taken their parts and made war machines ready for desert battles. Blacksmiths are taking old trucks and trailers and wrapping them in sheets of metal creating Mad Max-Style Vehicles.
The armor-plated Mad Max-Style vehicles reveal garish designs that are so extreme ISIS has slowed their advances at the sight of them.
They can be clunky at times – less maneuverability and poor visibility come standard with these desert DIY tanks. But they are still taking out their opposition in what is basically an armored base on treads that at one point used to till the morning crops.
The farmers themselves put all their metalworking skills to good use in making their machinery are effective as possible.
Desperation is the Mother of Improvisation
These Kurdish war machines are products of a problem you would find in a dystopian war story. Despite all the victories the Peshmerga are gaining against ISIS, they are pulling them off without getting the needed supplies to fight them.
Many times those who previously mentioned worn-out guns used against militants are running low on bullets, and there are very little signs of resupply from Western of other Middle Eastern sources. They are even denied proper armored cars outright. It was either create ones for themselves or survive on just flak jackets and faith alone.
A History of DIY Warfare
Don’t think that the creation of these crude but effective armored vehicles was an entirely new development. There have been reports of the YPG and Peshmerga using the same DIY tactics on their old cars and trucks when going into the battle with the Islamic State throughout Syria and Iraq as far back as 2014. Syrian rebels were using improvised armored vehicles back in 2012. These bootlegged armored cars just come from a long tradition of cars fitted for the ravages of war.
Machines of Morale
Just like in Mad Max, it ’is about image as well, whether good or bad. They are large morale boosts not just to the Kurdish fighters but also to the people they are protecting. They serve as signs of freedom to newly liberated towns and cities once under IS control.
In the last few years the Kurds have had to repel tens of thousands of well-equipped ISIS troops spreading throughout Syria and Iraq.
This time around the bravery of the Peshmerga will bring the bizarre but effective power of their apocalypse machines to the gates of Mosul. With rumors of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi holed up there while forces besiege the city, the Kurds will go in as a true fearsome sight to ISIS.
