It’s not often that a television program makes it into the Guinness World Records, but that was exactly what the critically acclaimed show, Breaking Bad, did. In 2013 the television program became the highest-rated TV series of all time, with an unprecedented Metacritic score of 99 out of 100. So what made viewers identify so heavily with Breaking Bad?

It seems, there were multiple things that kept this series going from strength to strength over five series that ran from January 2008 to September 2013. The characters were realistic and well represented and viewers were engaged on all levels as they shared the journey of lead-role Walter White (played by Bryan Cranston). Walter, a chemistry teacher, leaves his job as a result of his diagnosis with stage 3 Lung Cancer. Walter is motivated by a deep-seated desire to make adequate provision for his family and as a result, he turns to a life of crime. He partners with a former student Jesse, and together they cook Meth.

As Walter’s notoriety grows, he earns himself a formidable reputation in the underworld under the alias, “Heisenberg”. Fans argue about which moments of the Breaking Bad episodes, were the best, but a particularly memorable scene was known as “Not on my Territory.”

The scene unfolds in the local hardware store, where Walter is seen carrying two paint tins to the checkout. On the way, he notices an abandoned cart, with contents he recognizes as being the ingredients for preparing meth.

A frightened, scruffy young man approaches the cart and Walter quietly advises him that he should buy a different brand of matches with different strikers, and he points out that the young man should rather purchase his supplies in smaller quantities, from different stores, to avoid detection. The young man runs off and Walter follows him to the car-park, where he stands up to the young man’s mean-looking superior, and tells him in no uncertain terms to stay out of his territory.

The scene epitomizes so many aspects of what made Breaking Bad such a memorable TV Series. Walter is an ordinary man, that everyone can relate to, however, he is clearly driven by deep convictions and he enforces these without fear or hesitation. The series is best described as a moral journey of good and bad, that takes viewers on an adventure where they personally feel the conflicts raging inside the heart and life of Walter and those he impacts.

The Breaking Bad series earned the cast and crew a staggering number of prestigious awards. The series was created by Vince Gilligan, who once told the New York Times that the biggest lesson of the series was that actions have consequences. Perhaps that is what viewers most identified with. Other top names in the cast and crew included RJ Mitte (Walt Jr.), Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman), Anna Gunn (Skyler White), Dean Norris (Hank Schrader), and producer Mark Johnson, and they will forever be remembered in the annals of history for their part in memorializing the legend that became “Breaking Bad” [mashvideo]
