NASA set up a Cessna Airplane Crash to Test the Emergency Response System

NASA researchers sent a 172 Cessna aircraft to crash at the Langley Research Center to evaluate the emergency response system.

The researcher conducted a violent yet controlled experiment to test the effectiveness and durability of the emergency transmitters. They wanted to find out how the locator system will work in case of an airplane crash. They would like to know how it can notify the authorities of a plane crash so emergency rescue units will be activated.


The usual scenario experienced by rescuers is that when an airplane crash, the transmitters are also damaged because of the impact – this leaves the rescuers at lost. They do not know when and where they could extend their help to the potential victims.

The NASA’s Emergency Locator Transmitter Survivability and Reliability or ELTSAR are design to send out signals to alert the authorities regarding a violent airplane crash.

The realistic test conducted last week provided 64-channels of information regarding the severity of the impact. The violent crash was seen by 40 stand-by camera. The data was transmitted to the satellites and then relayed back to Langley Research Center.

In a press release statement, Chad Stimson, ELTSAR Project manager noted that the system provided a real-time feedback. He also added that this is the first ever system that can provide a better search and rescue outcomes.

Bottom line

The Emergency Locator of NASA will help rescuers in determining the exact location of the plane crash. They will also be given images about how severe the impact is and if there are survivors in the plane crash. In this way, immediate rescue assistance will be extended to the victim.

This will also give them an idea on what is the possible problem that leads to the violent airplane crash. NASA has high hopes that through this system there will be a more efficient and faster rescue operation.
