PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen) Receives a Guinness World Record Mention

Pikotaro, the Japanese comedian known for performing and creating the viral hit “Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen” song, snagged a Guinness World record for his incredibly catchy song.

He officially received this honor during a ceremony that was held in Tokyo.

PPAP was recognized to be shortest song to ever enter the Billboard Hot 100. On October 29 this year, the viral 45-second song and dance number was able to clinch a spot in the US charts.

People all over the world have also shared this song online, along with the accompanying video of Pikotaro performing it. In the performer’s home country, this viral hit was also able to prompt organic response from viewers, with the Japanese audience creating their own PPAP videos.

Since it was published on Youtube last August, the online video has been viewed for a whopping 67 million times. Some people attribute it to a tweet from Justin Bieber, where the famous Canadian singer called it his “favourite video on the Internet”.

As it turns out, you do not need millions of dollars in your budget to create a worldwide viral hit! Pikotaro’s video only cost 100,000 Yen to make.

That converts to roughly 950 dollars! What really took the viewer’s attention, other than the performance itself, is the comedian’s iconic yellow animal-print costume.

During a press conference, the comedian himself expressed his own surprise at his performance’s virality. “I’m surprised by this sudden popularity,” Pikotaro said.

He also acknowledged how Biebers tweet helped him achieve this unparalleled success by saying, “Without Justin’s impack, I think only four people would have showed up in this room.”

Despite his current popularity and worldwide success, Pikotaro remains humble, saying that he does not expect to sustain the craze around PPAP.

As of the moment, the comedian wants to focus on releasing as many fun songs as he can, still in the spirit of delighting his audience.
