The Pokemon invaded our world. They are on the TV show, in the Nintendo platforms and now in smartphones, Pokemon is an example of success that goes beyond the barriers of time. Although they are pocket monsters some Pokemon are based on real species, below is a list of 7 Pokemon that exist on our planet and you may not even know it.

Caterpie, the caterpillar

Yeah, it seems obvious that the Caterpie is a caterpillar, no surprises here. But what not everyone knows is that the Caterpie’s real specie is called Papilio Glaucus which is abundant in the American East Side and has impressive similarities with the monster, but Caterpie is cuter.

Magikarp is not a carp

When you hear ‘Magikarp’ you may think it’s a carp but not quite. Magikarp physically remembers the Yellow Rockfish (Sebastes ruberrimus) in his young age which also explains that this fish still “just a kid” and can evolve to a powerful Gyarados.

The carnivorous plant Victreebel :

The similarity between Victreebel and a pitcher plant is the first thing you notice when you know a little about exotic plants. The Victreebel’s poisonous powers has similarity with the pitcher plant too because the plant uses a slippery trap to eat some curious insects that fall inside it. And they are slowly digested.

The translucent Poliwag :

Poliwag is based on a kind of translucent frog that lives in the South and Central America. The most visible feature in the pokemon specie is the cute whirl in his belly, although not cute as Poliwag, in the frogs this whirl is a part of the intestine which is exposed because of its transparency.

Vileplume, the largest flower :

Vileplume have a Rafflesia Arnoldii in their head, which is also known as Monster Rafflesia because it is the largest flower in the world. This Pokemon from real life also has its poison, a substance that gives off a smell of rotting meat. Although disgusting this is the strategy used by the plant to be pollinated.

Satoshi Tajiri is a Japanese video game designer best known as the creator of the Pokemon franchise and the founder of video game developer Game Freak. Tajiri claims that the joining of two Game Boys via a link cable inspired him to create a game which embodied the collection and companionship of his childhood hobby and special interest, insect collecting. That’s why many of his character resembles real life animals.
